When I received a text from my friend asking me to go and watch "Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani," I felt a bit skeptic. When I learned that the tickets for the morning and afternoon shows were nearly booked for this film, I was stunned. What was the hype about? Just by the title of the film, I felt I was going to be watching another cheesy film. But then I chose to set those thoughts aside and decided to go into the theater with no expectations.
And it was the best decision I made. From start to finish, I was hooked. In the movie, when Rocky (Ranveer Singh), a flamboyant Punjabi young man with a quirky sense of humor meets Rani (Alia Bhatt), an outspoken Bengali TV reporter who radiates unrelenting confidence, cultures and traditions clash in a tumultuous whirlwind but passion begins to brew. It's a complete package infused with entertainment, drama, music and romance but with a fresh twist. The best part was the combination between the old-school Bollywood songs mixed with the new ones.
The film explores the themes of female empowerment, gender bias, character development and modern love. The script was comedic, witty and sentimental all at the same time. I found myself laughing, then crying and then laughing again. It's cliched to say but I actually felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster that was three hours long and one I didn't want to get off of. Although I couldn't dance in the theater, I did enjoy singing along to almost all of the songs.
By the end of the film, the song, "Tum Kya Mile," by Arijit Singh was stuck in my head and I knew that I had to watch it a second time.
