Hundreds of Muslims gathered at the Shia Association of Bay Area — also known as the SABA Center — on Saturday night for the Halal Food Festival.

Given the holy month of Ramadan, several people convened with their friends or family members in the wee hours of the morning to enjoy suhoor — the predawn meal — as they browsed through the various stalls.

Apart from the food vendors, small business owners were also present, many of whom were connecting with several of the attendees as they promoted their businesses.

I got to speak to a few of them including the founder of Andalus Shop, Hayaat Collections (who wanted to be interviewed off camera) and a henna tattoo artist.

Check out the video below for more details:

Halal food fests are not only beneficial to small business owners but also to attendees, because they foster community-building, solidarity, and unity among the Muslim diaspora.

The next halal food festival will take place at the Muslim Community Center — also known as MCA — in Santa Clara on Saturday, Mar. 29. I look forward to seeing you all there!
